Last week my work colleague got a birthday surprise that left him speechless!  His wife along with the guys in the office had been planning his birthday for weeks and they did an awesome job of keeping the secret from him.

The event was held at Jones Bay Wharf, Pyrmont with the food being cooked and prepared by celebrity chef Miguel Maestre.  Miguel is a funny and energetic person; he truly represents Spain and is proud of his heritage (he reminds me of my Spanish friends in Europe, fun people!). He has appeared on Masterchef as a guest chef as well as various TV appearances on channel 7 and 10. He is well known for regular appearances on the popular Boy’s Weekend cooking show on the Lifestyle FOOD channel.

Miguel is famous for his big paella and we were fortunate that he cooked this as well as other amazing tapas dishes on the night. The food was delicious; I love the chorizos and the paella.  My favourite of the night however was the oysters, it was very fresh and Miguel’s advice is to “experience different flavours” with your oysters.  I’ll definitely try this next time I have oysters again!

Meanwhile the birthday boy was at Establishment thinking he’ll be meeting his wife for dinner at 6.30pm. When he arrived he was shock, confused and very lost! He did not expect a crowd of about 60 people waiting to greet him. The planning had all paid off, we surprised him and the mission was accomplished!

Overall the entire night was a success!

Miguel’s tapas dishes: 8/10

If you want to try Miguel’s cooking you can visit Aperitif, where he is the head chef along with Manu Feildel, their restaurant is located in Potts Point, Sydney.
